The New Bach-Abel Concert series at Fidelio Cafe #1 - Bizzarrie sopra l'Antica Ciaccona

In about 1762 and for 15year-ish, two friends , J.Ch.Bach and K.F.Abel, started a concert series in London which was bound to become an entrepreneur model for decades. It was the first ever subscription concert series in London. They were both German immigrants, both had studied with J.S.Bach, and once settled in London they started to bring over famous singers and virtuoso instrumentalisits form the continent. Each concert was a selection of new compositions,  and music that their celebrated guests artists were bringing from aboard. The audience really knew the programme in advance, but the concerts were so popular that people were paying in advance tickets for the entire season.

We tought that Raffaello's newly open Fidelio cafe is the perfect place to revive this "Historical business experience" .

Music from the Sphinx

“Music from the Sphinx is a humorous reaction to this famous quote from Arturo Toscanini: ‘I will die before getting to understand women and the intonation of the double basses.’ As a woman and a double bassist, that must make me doubly difficult to understand! I must indeed be a sphinx …”

Royal Baroque - For the pleasure of the King

Coming from Finland, Norway, Poland and the United Kingdom, the members of Royal Baroque

met at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London in September 2010. They began with

an interest in the wide reaching influence of court music during the pre- baroque and baroque eras,

exploring the works of composers who enjoyed the patronage of the Royals. The group’s repertoire

extends from the early Italian to the national styles of the English, French, Polish and German

courts, which, with the majority being multi- instrumentalists, they are able to play in unique

combinations. Royal Baroque performed in many London venues, among others at the London

Handel Festival with Anna Starushkevych – the winner of the Handel Singing Competition.

Behn Quartet

This evening the Behn Quartet are performing two works by two of the most important composers within the string quartet repertoire. Haydn’s Op.76/1 is the first of his last completed set of quartets, in which he pushed the boundaries of compositional convention. Charles Burney wrote to Haydn praising his innovation:
‘...they are full of invention, fire, good taste, and new effects, and seem the production, not of a sublime genius who has written so much and so well already, but of one of highly-cultivated talents, who had expended none of his fire before.’
